A team of 14 children from years 5 – 8 travelled
to Queenswood School, Hertfordshire in July for the 60th National
IAPS tennis tournament. Some of the children playing for the
first time.
There were over 380 competitors across two
age groups, U12 and U14, boys and girls, all children played
in both the singles and doubles tournaments.
The tournament starts
with the doubles on Monday, singles on Tuesday and the final
rounds on Wednesday. The early matches are played in groups with
the top players qualifying for the knockout tournaments.
A number
of our pupils qualified for the knockout rounds, which is a great
achievement in itself; Ned Temple Pedersen and Pete Islip narrowly,
missed out on a quarter final place with an epic battle which
could have gone either way and certainly had spectators glued.
Hettie Horler was finally outplayed in the quarter finals after
playing some amazing tennis in her early rounds.
However the tournament
ended with a fantastic result; Erika Cotton, who had only just
missed out on a place in the finals of the singles, and Hettie
Horler won the U12 girls doubles.
The team were jubilant – all
the children showed fantastic sportsmanship throughout the whole
tournament and were a pleasure to accompany.
Congratulations to
you all and especially Erika and Hettie; a very deserved win.
